chapter 10

Cynthia and I stayed up cleaning the house. We didn’t want the girls to know that their mothers were drunkards so we put the house back in ship-shape condition. We threw away the liquor bottles to remove all signs of the drunken fiesta from the previous night.

The women were a part of the cleanup. Cynthia straightened out their clothes, and I put blankets on them. Mostly all were in rooms on the first floor except for Lisa and Valerie. We went upstairs and checked out the bedrooms. That’s where we found Lisa sleeping in Valerie’s arms. We slowly backed out of the bedroom, and closed the door.

“I didn’t see nothing,” Cynthia said.

“Me neither,” I whispered back.

“Let’s get out of here before they hear us,” Cynthia said.

We tried to get a quick nap before the children woke up. But before we could close our eyes, the little ones started to come upstairs. Before we knew it, we had ten screaming girls begging for breakfast. We reluctantly threw our blankets to the floor and marched into the kitchen.

“You get the eggs and bacon, I’ll get the sausages and pancakes,” I said. “And I don’t care how much those kids beg, it’s not going to be any McDonald’s this morning.”

“Affirmative!” Cynthia said.

After the children bathed we put in a movie to entertain them while they waited for breakfast. Meanwhile, Lisa and Valerie woke up and came downstairs one at a time. They had no idea we had spied on them in their sleep.

“Hey, what time did you two get up?” Lisa asked.

“We haven’t been to sleep,” Cynthia said.

“What? Y’all been up all of this time?” Valerie asked.

“Yes. We had to clean up the aftermath from the party last night,” I said.

“Oops! Sorry ’bout that, Mikey,” Valerie said, “let’s get the rest of them up to help feed their own kids.”

“Can you please wake ’em up?” Cynthia asked.

Valerie grabbed a skillet and a big spoon and banged them together making enough noise to wake the dead.

“Damn, my head hurts,” Darsha said, lying face down with her head in the pillow.

“Mine too,” Wanda said, lying with her blanket covering her head.

“What happened?” Susan asked.

“We got drunk, that’s what happened,” Wanda said.

“Oh my God, my head is killing me,” Alicia said.

“Where are the kids?” Susan asked.

“They’re downstairs watching a movie,” Cynthia said. “Maybe you ladies need to go wash up before your children see you looking like Ned the Wino.”

“Who’s Ned the Wino?” Susan asked.

“Don’t ask me,” Darsha said.

“He’s a drunk dude that used to be on The Waltons,” Wanda said.

“Oh, I never watched that show.”

“I got first dibs on a shower,” Darsha said.

Darsha, Lisa, Valerie, and Susan dashed to find available showers.

“Hey! Hey! Hey! No running! There are enough showers to go around,” Cynthia said.

“If I didn’t know no better, I’d swear up and down that this was your house, Cynt,” Wanda said.

“I spend enough time over here,” Cynthia said.

“Naw, I think it’s a little more than that,” Wanda said.

“Oh, is it deeper than that, Mike?” Pam asked, looking at me.
